Darth Vader Collection Darth Vader Collection

I find my lack of space disturbing.

I am not sure this is the largest collection of Vaders in captivity, but it should be in the top ten. It is a shining example of how far one can go with someone before admitting one has a problem. Many of the items were sourced locally but some were gathered from the US on visits over there.

This is most, but not all (sadly), of my Vader collection. The full collection includes... ...MORE

03 Dec 2005 :: Quick Review - Exclusive Kotobukiya Shocktrooper

Kotobikuya Exclusive Shocktrooper Kotobikuya Exclusive Shocktrooper

We've previously heaped praise on Kotobukiya product (Stormtrooper review). Since their earlier work, their line of approximately 12-inch scale characters has grown significantly in number, achieving, along the way, a level of consistently high quality. Amongst the best-selling favourites are a gamut of armoured Imperial/Republic characters - today we take a quick look at the StarWarsShop.com exclusive episode 3 Shocktrooper. This figure was released in limited numbers: 1000 through Toys-R-Us stores in Japan only, and 1000 through the official Star Wars shop.

I'm compelled to describe the Shocktrooper as Kotobukiya's best figure yet - it uses the same moulds as the blue-detailed EP3 501st clonetrooper, but is particularly striking in the blood red livery of Palpatine's personal shock-troops. I do note, however, that Koto have announced and shown a highly detailed and accurate original trilogy Snowtrooper, and a stunning rendition of Episode 3's Commander Bly, both due next year - the competition for the title of 'best figure' is going to be hotly contested!

Although one could argue that some earlier Koto Imperial statues were presented in a slightly more interpretative style... the more recent pieces are all about faithful accuracy, and, consequently, the armour and helmet of the shocktrooper are spot on... ...MORE

23 Jun 2005 :: Quick Review - Hasbro ARC-170

Hasbro ARC-170 Hasbro ARC-170

The Republic ARC-170 from Hasbro is a big piece of plastic. A big, impressive piece. With a wingspan on par with the Imperial Shuttle from the same line, you'll need to make some serious space in your collection to display this versatile fighter/bomber. Fortunately, it sits level, and looks good in a desktop display, but spectacularly recreates a movie scene when hung from the ceiling.

The ARC-170 comes packed with action features, should that be your thing, but alas, is not equipped with light or sound. A handle pops out of a hidden compartment, at the vehicle's centre of gravity, and includes a trigger that open the bomb bay doors to drop munitions on the Separatist scum. S-foils can be adjusted into attack position, and the rear gun emplacement rotates in 2 axes. 2 separate cockpits accomodate 3 figures ...should you manage to find 3 of the rare Temuera Morrison-as-ARC-pilot figures, and a droid socket will take any astromech figure on board (albeit a little loosely)... ...MORE

Revenge of the Sith Novelisation

It's not unusual to leave a movie theatre feeling like you want more. That feeling is considerably more pronounced after having waited 27 years to see the last of six movies.

Having read the novelisations of episodes four through six, which each felt like they added about three paragraphs of insight to the movie content, I was a little sceptical about reading the book of the film for 'Revenge of the Sith'. Within a couple of pages, my scepticism was starting to fade.

One thing that I felt was insufficiently explained in the movie was the change in the relationship between Anakin and both Padme and Obi-Wan, respectively, and the whole slide of Anakin to the Dark Side. Considerably more depth is given to this in the book, as you would expect. This makes the change appreciably more credible, which Anakin really deserved (whether you agree with his decision processes or not, it helps if you can at least relate to his motives). ...MORE

Today's (Saturday's) New Zealand Herald is a Star Wars extravaganza, with much general coverage in the accompanying 'TimeOut' magazine. And then, on page A10 (click here for the online version) a well researched article gives a more local perspective on the phenomenon. I get mildly misquoted near the end, because, of course, we've heard a lot about LucasFilm's upcoming plans, but in the phone interview, there was limited time to expand on such things. 05 May 2005 :: 'Revenge of the Sith' Review

Freakin' beautiful. That's what I was thinking as I sat, mildly stunned, watching an advance screening of Star Wars: Episode 3, earlier today. Hard to imagine, after all this time - the bridge between the prequels and the original trilogy. And it is the keystone episode - very plausible in both content and execution.

It's been described as dark, emotive - you'd better believe it. Episode 3 is unrestrained in comparison to its predecessors, and the returning actors have matured and developed their characters to adequately elucidate the fall of Vader. My vote for Most Valuable Actor? Ian McDiarmid has gone comparatively under-appreciated for his contributions to the 6 episode saga. In 'Revenge', he extends the duplicity of Palpatine to new heights in order to fulfill a role equal in importance that of Anakin/Vader. Most recognisable Actor? Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christiansen open the action, but the first character seen after their on-screen introduction is Temuera Morrison. Or more correctly, the first characters seen are Temuera Morrison, as he plays the clones of the Grand Army of the Republic. New Zealanders will be entertained to see multiple versions of this well-known local actor replying to the Jedi in succession. Other New Zealand actors take the screen in less obvious roles, but are worth keeping an eye out for: Bodie Taylor, Jay Laga'aia, Rena Owen, and Keisha Castle-Hughes.

Episode 3 opens with a variation on the memorable and majestic Star Destroyer flyover of 'A New Hope'. A pair of starfighters enter the composition, and the camera floats amongst the convincing CG vehicles, in a ballet impossible with physical models and recording devices. Then the action explodes. The 'Pearl Harbour' battle, in space. The tempo only remits when it is necessary to heighten or deepen the emotion... ...MORE

This message in from Armageddon, Wellington, exhibitor, Reel Collectibles: Id like to take this opportunity to thank the two members of the 501st that were at the expo and allowed us to have photos taken with them at the Reel Collectibles stall. A first for me, being photographed with the Dark Side, although I was to repeat that feat later that day. In return, we gave the guys a first-hand feel of the weight of the Master Replicas Stormtrooper Blaster. The MR product was extremely popular, especially the Force FX sabers. The Darth Vader model that we had sold on Saturday morning apparently ended up on stage dueling with Ray Park. We met Ray himself on Sunday, had a good chat with him, a very nice bloke by the way, and had our Limited Edition MR Darth Maul Battle Damaged Saber display case signed as well as a Darth Maul 0.45 scale model and the obligatory autographed photo and poster.

Due to the success of the show and increased interest in Master Replicas products, Reel Collectibles will be endeavoring to bring the Star Wars fans of NZ more MR product. The site will be updated soon and we will be receiving the MR Limited Edition Rebel Snowspeeder this week. A new shipment of Force FX and 0.45 models will be due in a couple of weeks.

Thanks again 501st, there are some photos of the show at this link: Create.co.nz/ReelCollectibles/arm05.htm.

First thing this morning, George worked his way through 3 half-hour sessions of five thousand fans each. Queues for this limited entry event started some time during the night, but with a combination of volunteer passes and serendipity, we got centre-stage seats for this memorable interview with only about 20 minutes wait. George's interview session was hosted by Jay Laga'aia, and the two were joined on stage by prequel producer Rick McCallum, who had stayed on longer from his attendance yesterday. "The must-read prequel to Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith". So claims the marketing tag-line that adorns James Luceno's 'Labyrinth of Evil'. Normally I'd expect such a boast to represent clichd hyperbole, but in this instance, I find myself agreeing with the assertion. Not only is this book an excellent read, but it leads directly into Episode 3, detailing events and character backstories in a manner that will undoubtedly heighten the action-packed opening of 'Revenge'.

James Luceno's style and pace is a refreshing contrast to some of the New Jedi Order tomes I've recently struggled through. His chapters are brief and dramatic, in a manner that mirrors Lucas's on-screen tactic of rapid, brusque scene-changes. The book is hard to put down... ...MORE

08 Jan 2005 :: Herald Hopes for Sith Success

Keisha Castle-Hughes

The New Zealand Herald places 'Revenge of the Sith' first amongst its list of anticipated movies for 2005. They describe Episode 3 thus: "The 'Star Wars' gang is back, including Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Hayden Christiansen. This story takes place three years after the end of 'Episode II' when a massive battle is underway during the last days of the Clone Wars. The gap between the prequels and the original 'Star Wars' trilogy is bridged with the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire at the conclusion of the Clone Wars. At this time, the Jedi are scattered, Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader and we meet the infants Luke and Leia."
