12 Mar 2008 :: Store Report - Auckland

Whitcoulls in Albany (not the one in the Westfield mall) had one copy of the next new Star Wars paperback ... but unfortunately I bought it, so you will need to check different stores or ask them to order a copy, sorry.

Star Wars: Allegiance ($25.99)
by Timothy Zahn
400 pages, plus a 16 page preview of "Darth Bane: Rule of Two"
ISBN: 978-0-099-49197-2

Borders in Albany didn't seem to have it yet.

The Warehouse in Albany has a couple of Mighty Mugg figures and quite a few Obi-Wan Master Replicas lightsabers ($179.99, from memory), plus Hasbro's new "colour-change" lightsaber.

Many places now have the two-DVD set for "Galactica 1980" - the sequel series to the original "Battlestar Galactica" which was often called "Star Wars for TV". This is the one where they find Earth, have flying motorcycles, send scouts (literally boy and girl scouts!) down and travel back in time to fight the Nazis. Yes, it's an *awful* series that has little to do with the original show, but unfortunately the DVD set also contains "The Return of Starbuck" episode - the one part of the entire show that *is* worth watching. Whitcoulls has the best price I found in a quick search with an introductory price of only $24.99 (a $15 discount).

Whitcoulls also had "Mission Galactica" DVD at an introductory price of $24.99. This one is the two episodes from the original "Battlestar Galactica" series that have been stuck together as a "movi". It's the episodes where the Galactica meets the Battlestar Pegasus. This one is really only for completist collectors.

Gentle Giant Collectors

A report in from GentleGiantCollectors.com: Once again, Amanda Burns from Gentle Giant Ltd. was kind enough to answer some great questions that GentleGiantCollectors.com had about a broad spectrum of products.

Some of the questions collectors had were: Will we have alternate versions of the SDCC Anakin? Is the Star Wars Busts Ups line done? When will the Obi Mini Bust redemption info come out? Will there be a Star Wars Japan Celebration Exclusive? What is the price point for the Fred and George 2-pack? Will PayPal become a payment method for the website at some point? And more!

All those questions, as well as others can be read by clicking here or heading to Yodasnews.com or GentleGiantCollectors.com.

04 Mar 2008 :: Store Report - Wellington

The skinny from a weekend store run to Toyworld Balance Street in Wellington: still loads of 2007 30th Anniversary figures on the pegs (McVader, Smuggler Lando, 4-LOM, General McQuarrie etc) and a number of new ones with stands instead of coins – mostly repacked figures from later 2007 waves (Voolvif Monn, Padme Amidala in fireside dress etc), but there were also a handful of the 2008 Wave 2 The Force Unleashed figures still to be had as well. I saw Rahm Kota and Maris Brood. Basic figures remain $20 though some bore "$2 back" stickers. Wave 1 of 2008 (ROTS) has come and gone, as have most of the Wave 2 (TFU), but there were some new comic 2-packs including the Lt. Deena Shan and Lt. Jundland pack ($35).

Also available were the new evolutions packs. I saw the Fett Legacy and TFU Sith apprentice sets ($70).

Good hunting kiwis!

29 Feb 2008 :: Charles Ross - 'One Man Star Wars Trilogy' in NZ!

Charles Ross

Some big and exciting news! Charles Ross, the talented entertainer behind the 'One Man Star Wars Trilogy', will be performing his show in New Zealand (in association with the NZ International Comedy Festival)! His website confirms the dates as Tuesday 6th May to Sunday 11th May, Sky City, Auckland, and Tuesday 20th May to Sunday 25th May, Te Papa, Wellington!

I've seen him perform at the Celebration conventions, and totally recommend his show for a laugh-until-you-cry evening! I'm running out of exclamation marks! We'll keep you up to date as more details come to hand.

From Charles Ross' official website: Best known as the mastermind behind the infamous One Man Star Wars Trilogy and One Man Lord of the Rings, Charles Ross is a Canadian actor who has followed his heart and his career from one side of the continent to the other. Since first performing his One Man Star Wars Trilogy in Toronto, Ontario in January of 2001, Ross has brought countless audiences, both large and small, to their feet with his surprisingly unique shows.

Word of Ross's one of a kind talent has spread like wildfire with recent appearances on Craig Ferguson, The Today Show, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. His off-Broadway debut in August 2005 was a smashing success with critics raving about the incredible intensity that Charles brings to his work. To mark the release of Star Wars: Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, Charles was honored to perform at Lucasfilm's official movie release convention, Celebration 3. Even the likes of Vin Diesel and Sir Ian McKellan have taken in his performances with rave reviews.

No matter the engagement, be it a rowdy night out with friends, a matinee with the family or a Sci-Fi conventions for the very dedicated, Charles Ross has entertained the masses with his high-energy and side-splitting romp through Middle Earth or a galaxy far, far away.

29 Feb 2008 :: Around the Web - People vs George

From the 'People vs George' team: Now that two months have elapsed since our official launch, here's a quick update about our recent accomplishments.

The past couple of weeks have been nothing short of phenomenal. JoBlo himself (of JoBlo.com, DVD Clinic, Arrow In The Head, and Movie Hotties) agreed to send us his interview for the project, and kindly posted a news blurb on his website. Since then, our story has been picked up by numerous movie/sci-fi websites.

We also have some very exciting news that we can't share just yet; but suffice it to say that we have initiated contact with several high-profile people, who have pledged to participate in the film, and whose contributions will, no doubt, be invaluable to our project. Stay tuned for more information. And, yes, we've already received our first submissions, and we're getting e-mail messages every day from people around the world currently working on interviews, scenes, etc. Considering that we're approximately 22 months away from our projected release, we couldn't be happier with the overall response, your continued enthusiasm, and the increasing exposure that our project is getting.

Next on our agenda? Why, stay on target, of course! We need to continue reaching out to fans everywhere, and encourage everyone you know to participate. Keep checking our website (www.PeopleVsGeorge.com) for the latest news.

Onward and upwards!

SWNZ affiliate Fishpond.co.nz has recently added to their list of things you can do in order to earn "cash rewards" - get store credit for doing things like writing reviews of their product! At 20 cents per review, it doesn't take long to knock a few $$ off the price of a new paperback, or, if you're a prolific reviewer, maybe pick up a book or two completely free. You don't need to have purchased the item through them to review it - it just needs to exist in their database, and not have been reviewed before - just search for or select the product, and click on the "write review" button. 10 Feb 2008 :: Store Reports - Auckland

The "Blue Harvest" Family Guy parody of Star Wars has been released on DVD - there's a single DVD version and a "Special Edition" box with lots of extras. After doing a bit of a search, the cheapest place for the "Special Edition" seems to be JB Hi Fi in Auckland (Albany / Queen Street and a couple of other branches) at $59.98 - around $20 cheaper than anywhere else. Be aware that it is R16 because of "sexual references".

Plus, when I was checking the DVD price at Borders in Albany I found that they had some more Star Wars items on the small shelves near the checkouts. There are now four different Wacky Wobblers (Vader, Stormtrooper, Boba Fett and Yoda) priced at $35.99 each. On the same shelves they also have some Star Wars Deformed soft toy versions of Yoda and Chewie, priced at $29.50 each. These are probably available at the other Border branches too.

01 Feb 2008 :: S.W.O.R.A Contest - Winning Logo

S.W.O.R.A.

The following announcement comes in from Gerald Home:

Dear S.W.O.R.A. Members,

It's your Ambassador here with a few words of explanation about how I chose the winning logo.

Before I start, let me thank everyone who entered the competition - the standard was extremely high and it has been very difficult to choose the winner.

Many of the designs are excellent; however, when you shrink them down to website logo size the symbols and writing in several of them are too small and not legible. This was the reason that many of the entries wouldn't work as a logo.

I also decided not to use anything which was too "political" - too Imperial, or too Rebel - or which had drawings of the Death Star or Darth Vader. Yes, these are fun and interesting, but not "neutral" enough to be the logo of an Alliance which includes Imperials and Rebels - and people who are neither!

I hope you like my choice. I think it's perfect as the first official SWORA logo, and I hereby congratulate its designer - Longjb. Well done! I look forward to seeing your logo on websites etc very soon. Your limited-edition signed photo will be in the post to you very soon, with my thanks and congratulations.

By the way, there were 2 other designs which I selected for possible use in the future, but they must stay a secret for the moment! You'll see them in the months ahead.

Thanks again to everyone who entered. It has been an honour and a pleasure for me to be involved in this wonderful SWORA adventure. Hope to see you on the road. Until then....May the Force be with you all.

30 Jan 2008 :: New Zealand Collecting - Kollecta.com

Introducing a new NZ website, Kollecta.com: Kollecta is a site built by collectors, for collectors. It provides a free, online application for people to organise their items, and connect and trade with others based on their collecting interests.

After registering online, members gain access to a database of over 1 million collectable items and an array of exciting features. By checking this database, a collector can quickly record which items are of interest, and list what they own, want, or have for sale. This enables members to build a digital record of what they have collected so far and what they need to complete their collection. If an item isnt in the database it can be added. Images, values and ratings can also be added to the database of items, allowing the individual collector to benefit the community by becoming an expert in their collecting field. Collectors are rewarded by a points system through such participation. In the future, Kollecta points will bring rewards for high levels.

The premise behind Kollecta is simple. Collectors select items they have, and add them to collections. This way, the site connects its members through the items they love. Collectors of similar Items form Groups. If there is no group then they are able to create one! This way, buyers and sellers and fans come together in Kollecta to trade Items they share an affinity with.

Kollecta was built and is currently operated by a small team headed entreupeneur Mr Barney Walker. Like the collectors that the site is targeting, we love collecting, recording, and exchanging all kinds of items. New Zealand based, but with an international focus, Kollecta aims to appeal to and unite the many different kinds of collectors already using online resources to catalog and display their collections. Although the site is in its early stages, but with an excellent concept and a pleasing interface, it promises to be of interest to many people who currently use the internet as a resource to further their collecting pursuits.

A few Star Wars finds today in Albany (Auckland) - a couple of books and a couple of unusual figures...

  - Whitcoulls in the Warehouse shopping centre has paperback copies of 'Legacy of the Force #7: Fury' (356 pages, $25.99). There were none at the Whitcoulls in the Westfield mall and for some peculiar reason Borders lists it as something they can order, but have no stock. There was also one copy at the Whitcoulls in Milford. In the back is a 10 page preview of the next book in the series 'Legacy of the Force #8: Relevation'.
  - Borders in the Westfield Mall has paperback copies of 'Republic Commando #3: True Colors' (451 pages, $20.99). In the back it also includes a 21 page bonus story called 'Republic Commando: Odds'. Also in the back is a 10 page preview of the 'Death Star' book.
  - Borders had about 10 Darth Vader 'Wacky Wobbler' figures (basically 'Bobbleheads' by another company) figures on the shelves that line the checkout queue area. These were priced at about $36 each.
  - Farmers in the Westfield mall has some of the Mega Mugg figures reported by someone else. They had two each of Han Solo, Chewbacca and Boba Fett, but there was nothing to say how much they cost. They were on the very bottom shelf.

Gentle Giant Jawa Busts Gentle Giant Jawa Busts Gentle Giant Jawa Busts Gentle Giant Jawa Busts Gentle Giant Jawa Busts Gentle Giant Jawa Busts

The 'Figure of the Month' is a semi-regular SWNZ feature, wherein we take an up close look at a selected character collectible, focusing on interesting features of both the toy and its on-screen persona. We don't aim to compile an extensive database about all available Star Wars figures, but make a choice based on elements of interest to hopefully expose readers to different collectibles, or new directions of collecting. Today, we take a look at the Jawas collectible mini-busts from Gentle Giant.

The Gentle Giant Jawa mini-busts are sold as a set of two...well, technically two-and-a-bit, I guess, as creative license has them depicting an off-screen moment where repairs are attempted on a decapitated R5-D4. Each desert scavenger stands approximately 13cm tall, in scale with (ie, shorter than) the rest of the mini-bust catalogue. 'Blaster' Jawa has 2 interchangeable arms and ion weapons, so that you can select and swap in the firearm of your choice. 'Fixer' Jawa uses a cobbled together power tool to tinker with the innards of the R5 astromech's faulty brain... ...MORE

07 Jan 2008 :: Around the Web - Yoda's News

YodasNews.com

Newsfeed in from Yodasnews.com: Yodasnews.com is very excited to be breaking this exciting news exclusively to our readers. The last US Mini-Helmet to be produced by Master Replicas will be the Utapau Shadow Tropper and will be sold exclusively through RazorsEdgeCollectibles.com. This Helmet will be strictly limited to only 500 pieces produced worldwide.

These Helmets will go on sale in the next 30 days with a strict limit of 2 per household. More details will be posted at Yodasnews as the sale date gets closer.

As the Clone Wars raced toward its tumultuous conclusion, Jedi Knights, fighting alongside battalions of Clone Troopers are spread throughout the galaxy engaging the massive droid armies of General Grievous and the Separatists.

This Elite unit of Clone Troopers are fully encased in a Black Stygian-Triprismatic Polymer Armor with their faces concealed behind an Orange, T-shaped Visor. ThisDistinctive Armor had increased Sensor Stealth capabilities which allowed them to move about undetected, working in the shadow of the 212th Attack Battalion on Utapau. As with all of the clone units throughout the galaxy, their allegiance changes when Chancellor Palpatine seizes power and enacts Order 66, outlawing the Jedi and declaring them the enemy of the new Galactic Empire.

Crafted from quality materials, and using the original Ilm digital character files from the Lucasfilm archives, Master Replicas is proud to recreate this Star Wars Clone Trooper Helmet that bridges the gap between the Clone Trooper forces of the Prequels to the Stormtroopers of the Classic Trilogy and will be sold exclusively though Razor's Edge Collectibles.

26 Dec 2007 :: Around the Web - People vs George

The People vs. George Lucas was officially announced to the world a week ago, and we're delighted to say that, thanks to your help and support, our project has been embraced by the international fan community, and met with contagious enthusiasm. Our first 48 hours have been spectacular: thousands of hits originating from no less than 48 countries! The fans have spoken, and they want their voices heard loud and clear. With this knowledge comes a responsibility, and we pledge to work very hard to create a truly democratic filmfor and by the people. The assertion from one lone SW site that we're a bunch of whining fan boys couldn't be farther from the truth. Maybe they didn't take the time to read the content of our website? But you all know better, and rest assured that we will treat your footage and opinions with respect.

Remember: the success of this film largely depends on your support and involvement, and we're very grateful for all the passionate and encouraging e-mails we've received from you so far. As we look to the future, we'd like to encourage you to become advocates for our cause. This is a unique opportunity for all of us to reveal the depth and diversity of Star Wars fandom. More than anything, we hope that this documentary will shed new light on the OOT issue and encourage Lucasfilm to pay closer attention to the millions who have remained staunch supporters of the franchise in spite of their discontent. It's also a unique way for us all to celebrate the passionate relationship we share with the SW universe and George Lucasone that binds us together, no matter where we're from, or which language we speak.

You can expect more 'goodies' on our website in the near future, including a blog on our MySpace page (http://myspace.com/peoplevsgeorge), teaser clips from the fan footage we receive, and, eventually, cool SW prizes. As far as we know, this is the first feature documentary in history that relies on the active participation of its audience, and we want to continue to build strong alliances with all of you.

More than just a documentary, The People vs. George Lucas is an event that concerns every Star Wars fan out there. Together, we can create an extraordinary piece that, come Winter 2009, will be the pride of every person for whom Star Wars resonates as a generational mythology, and of those who embraced it as a cultural phenomenon synonymous with community and lasting friendships.

22 Dec 2007 :: Quick Review - 'Art of Star Wars' 2008 Calendar

Art of Star Wars Calendar Art of Star Wars Calendar

The Calendar Club stalls in many malls around the country at this time of the year currently have a couple of Star Wars calendars for sale. One, the 'Art of Star Wars' 2008 Calendar, is a nice collection of new and classic artwork from the entire saga, and comes with a DVD of bonus material (at a price of $27.99). Although it advertises itself as a 16 month calendar, it actually only comes with 13 leaves...the last 4 months of 2007 make up a single page.

The posters depicted for each month come from a variety of artists and sources, including Boris Vallejo, Tsueno Sanda, the vintage Fan Club Death Star trench scene by Ralph McQuarrie, and artwork from Hasbro Unleashed packaging. A fantastic assortment. A minor disappointment, however, is that the monthly illustrations cross over the page seam, meaning they can't be removed intact to be used as posters at the end of the year - ah well, you still get at least 365 days of enjoyment out of it while the calendar is in use.

The included bonus DVD contains movie trailers (EP1 A, EP1 B, EP2 'Mystery', EP2 'Clone', EP3 teaser, EP3 launch, EP4 teaser, EP4 launch, EP5 teaser, EP5 launch, EP6 teaser and EP6 launch - they are the original theatrical trailers...a great bonus) and the Star Wars: Revenge of the Brick "mini-movie".

Slated for release in 2009, The People vs. George Lucas will be the ultimate Star Wars fan film, and we'd like to encourage you to participate in the making of this exciting new documentary. There's basically no limit to how active a participant you can be, and we want you to help us give Star Wars fans across the globe a voice. This film is about empowering the fans. It's about telling George what we love and hate about Star Wars. 15 Dec 2007 :: Vader Balloon in the Waikato

Darth Vader Balloon Darth Vader Balloon Darth Vader Balloon

The event organisers have sent through an email to confirm that the Darth Vader Hot Air Balloon will be coming to the 'Balloons over Waikato' festival from the 9th-13th April 2008. The Pilot Michel Lambert is bringing his balloon from Belgium to fly for all the 5 days of the festival in Hamilton.

Some Star Wars fans will already be familiar with the over-sized Darth Vader helmet-shaped balloon that has flown at a number of events in Europe, and, more recently, in USA...I've received confirmation from the balloon's pilots/owners that it will be making an appearance at the Balloons over Waikato show in Hamilton, 9-13 April 2008.

The balloon is 26 metres tall, is officially approved by Lucasfilm, and was made by transforming vector models of Vader's helmet into a giant, flight-ready representation of the Dark Side. The balloon made its first flight on March 8, 2007.

Stay tuned for more details about this event, as they come to hand.

Following on from the closer look at the New Zealand Collection pages a few days ago, today we continue with a step back for a wider look at SWNZ's other main subsection, The New Zealand Connexion: For the greater part of the Star Wars history, New Zealand has felt like the civilization farthest from the bright centre of the Universe. The dissemination of information via the internet started to change that, as did the tantalising proximity of The Phantom Menace's Sydney production, but nothing compared to the revelation that New Zealanders would be included in the cast of The Attack of the Clones. Shortland Street stars as bounty hunters and galactic miscreants? The lead actor and actress of Once Were Warriors once again playing in the same scenes on the big screen?

And now, the NZ connexion lives on in Episode 3, with the return of Bodie, Rena, Tem and Jay. And the connexion goes beyond just our favourite actors: designers, artists...want to find out a little bit more about their life before Star Wars? ...MORE
