10 Oct 2006 :: Review - Star Wars Figurine Collection no.3
Issue 3 of 'Star Wars: The Official Figurine Collection' brings us an odd coupling of figures - an Imperial Stormtrooper, and Jedi Master Yoda. This appears to be one of the few, if not only, issue to come with a pair of collectible figures. These characters are in near-perfect scale with the earlier releases - the stormtrooper stands a little shorter than his Sith Lord master, while Yoda is appropriately tiny standing next to his metal companions. Yoda's paintjob is superior to that of the stormtrooper, whose handpainted finish doesn't quite live up to the advertised prototypes. While the painted detailing of the trooper may not be spot on, it does have a nice gloss finish, giving it the feel of the metal soldiers that kids of generations past might have played with.
The contents covered in the magazine are as follows (note that Imperial Stormtroopers aren't covered, despite being one of the accompanying figures)...
Heroes and Villains: Jedi Master Yoda.
A Galaxy Far, Far Away: Rebel Alliance Headquarters - Echo Base.
Concepts: Masters and Padawans - Jedi Knights.
Spaceships and Vehicles: A-wings and B-wings (large, fold-out pages for each of these starfighters).
Droids: R5-D4.
Species and Beings: gifted musicians - Bith.
The Phenomenon: Inventing a Galaxy.
This latter section is particularly interesting, as it follows George Lucas from way back in January 1973, as he begins the long path to creating the Star Wars saga, and, in particular, the first-to-be-released Episode 4. There's also a brief sidebar touching on artist Ralph McQuarrie's role and contributions to the look of the Star Wars universe.
Next issue comes packed with protocol droid C-3PO (in his original trilogy finish). Contents advertised for that magazine include Wedge Antilles, Dagobah, The Old Republic, the N-1 Naboo starfighter, Tauntauns, and Legendary Ships: the Galactic Fleet.
